About Willard Research

Willard Research supports museums, conservators, and collectors with technical imaging and analysis that’s designed to answer real questions on materials, structure, condition, and change over time. Imaging is most useful when it leads to clear next steps: what’s happening, why it matters, and what to do about it.

Our Story

Willard Research is led by Charlie Willard. During his PhD, he developed high-resolution hyperspectral imaging (HSI) methods for paintings, with a focus on repeatable, calibrated capture and imaging on three-dimensional surfaces. That research foundation is paired with generations of family experience in the design and manufacture of conservation equipment, bringing together scientific rigour and practical conservation problem solving.

Our Imaging

We use advanced methods including hyperspectral imaging, ultraviolet fluorescence, infrared reflectography (up to 1700 nm), microscopy and reflectance transformation imaging (RTI) to reveal hidden layers, map materials, and create reliable records. We also support clients in the processing and analysis of archived image data, turning complex datasets into clear and practical insights.

How We Work

Every project is a collaboration. We adapt our methods to your questions, object-handling needs, and timelines, with an emphasis on calibrated capture, reproducible processing, and clear deliverables. Our work ranges from lightweight pipelines for routine monitoring to the processing of legacy datasets and the design of one-off experiments for unusual challenges.

Collaboration

We work with museums, private collections, and researchers in the UK and internationally, complementing conservation practice with evidence and insight. Whether the goal is to uncover hidden layers, monitor condition, identify materials, or build new imaging capacity, we’ll design the right approach together.

Get in Touch

If you’d like to discuss a project or explore how imaging could support your collection, please get in touch. We’ll create a practical plan around your objects, questions, and budget.
